Nathaniel Thomas was in the business of breaking records at the recent ISSA High Schools Swimming Championships that took place at the National Stadium pool this past weekend.

Thomas, a student at Campion College set five records. Four were in individual events and one in the relays.

He’ll be hoping to build on this performance at the upcoming CARIFTA Championships in Barbados in the 15-17 age group category.

Based on information sourced from Next College Student Athlete (ncsa.org), Nathaniel stated that since he was a baby, he always loved water. His mother believes that this is part of his DNA as both parents hail from Port Royal. Although he could not swim at first, it came naturally to him as he grew up. After trying various sports such as cricket, football/soccer and tennis, swimming was the sport that he found most appealing.

Since the age of 10, he has been swimming competitively. Swimming helped him overcome his shyness and introversion. He is now more confident about himself, comfortable talking to strangers and has also become a role model for those around him. Thomas said swimming has enhanced attributes such as time management skills.

Swimming isn’t cheap. Nathaniel and his mother find it challenging to raise funds in order to compete in international meets, representing Jamaica. Nathaniel aims to attend the best college possible which will give him the opportunity to represent Jamaica at the highest level while becoming an architect.
