How do you become the oldest person on the planet? In a 2017 interview, according to Violet-Mosse Brown, don’t drink Rum.

Brown, a Montegonian living in Jamaica is also known as Aunt V. She was born March 10, 1900. Apart from the advice of not drinking rum, the family definitely has good genes as Brown’s son was also a ripe age of 97.

Andrew Holness, Jamaica’s Prime Minister, congratulated Brown for achieving the title of world’s oldest living person when it was bestowed on her.

When she turned 110 years old in 2010, Brown told The Jamaica Gleaner, “Really and truly, when people ask me what I eat and drink to prolong my life, I tell them that I eat everything except pork and chicken and don’t drink any rum or them things.”

She was raised Christian and has been a church organist and music teacher for more than 80 years. She took over the responsibilities of her husband’s estate in 1997 and became the record-keeper at the local cemetery. She kept this job until her 100th birthday.

Brown has seen many of the major historical events. Brown remembers the arrival of the first planes and cars to Jamaica and the introduction of electricity and pipes. She survived both world wars, as well as the founding of her nation. She is also Queen Victoria’s last subject. Ms Mosse Brown was presented with a plaque by Queen Elizabeth II to celebrate her longevity as the oldest citizen in the Commonwealth.

Brown’s great-granddaughter Lelieth Palmer and her granddaughter Nicole Palmer Murray founded the Violet Moss Foundation in order to care for the elderly. Palmer stated that Brown was very hardworking was happy living in Duanvale (Jamaica), where her family lived for over 200 years.


Ms. Mosse Brown said that she spent a lot of her childhood cutting sugarcane in the surrounding fields. She also attended church on a regular basis.

“I was a cane farmer. I would do all the work myself.” Ms Mosse Brown said.
“I have done almost everything at the church. I spent most of my time at the church. I love to sing. “I spent my entire life in the church, from when I was a child up to today.”

In her last days, Brown had two caregivers, and spent her time in her home with her son who is almost a centenarian
Violet Mosse Brown, at 117 years old, was the oldest person in the world and the first supercentenarian to be verified from Jamaica.
